Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Kigali, Rwanda
Arrive at Kigali International Airport, where your guide will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the option to relax and enjoy the vibrant Rwandan capital or explore some nearby sites. Kigali, known for its cleanliness and scenic hills, is a pleasant introduction to your safari adventure. Overnight in Kigali (Bed & Breakfast, BB)
Day 2 -Kigali City Tour & Transfer to Musanze
After breakfast, embark on a guided tour of Kigali, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum, which offers a somber but important insight into Rwanda’s history. Afterward, explore a local market, where you can buy handcrafted goods and experience the daily life of Rwandans. In the afternoon, drive to Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), a picturesque town nestled near Volcanoes National Park. Participate in the Red Rock Cultural Experience, where you will learn about local beer brewing and take part in a tree-planting activity to give back to the environment. Overnight at a lodge in Musanze (Full Board, FB).
Day 3 – Drive to Bukavu, Congo & Enter Kahuzi-Biega National Park
In the morning, depart from Musanze and drive to the Bukavu border, crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo. Upon entering Congo, continue your journey to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its population of eastern lowland gorillas. This remote and less-touristed park offers an incredible opportunity to encounter these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Settle into your lodge near the park for the night and prepare for your gorilla trekking experience. Overnight at a lodge near Kahuzi-Biega (Full Board, FB).
Day 4 – First Lowland Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, set off on your first gorilla trek in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Led by experienced guides and trackers, you will hike through dense forests to locate a family of lowland gorillas. These treks can take several hours, depending on the movement of the gorillas, but the reward is immense – a close encounter with these gentle giants in the heart of the African wilderness. Return to your lodge in the afternoon for some well-deserved rest. Overnight at your lodge near Kahuzi-Biega (Full Board, FB).
Day 5 – Second Lowland Gorilla Trekking
On your second day of trekking, head back into the forests of Kahuzi-Biega National Park for another opportunity to observe the lowland gorillas. Each trek offers a unique experience, as you may encounter different families or observe varied behaviors. The experience is both humbling and exhilarating, as you witness the gorillas in their natural habitat, going about their daily lives. After the trek, return to your lodge and enjoy a relaxing evening. Overnight at your lodge near Kahuzi-Biega (Full Board, FB).
Day 6 – Hike the Tshibati Waterfalls & Return to Kigali
On your final day, enjoy a morning hike to the stunning Tshibati Waterfalls( Optional), located in the mountains of Kahuzi-Biega National Park. The hike offers spectacular views and the chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of Congo’s natural landscapes. Afterward, cross the border back into Rwanda and return to Kigali. Depending on your flight time, you may have time for a quick visit to a local craft market before heading to the airport for your departure.
